Cardhu Distillery

Cardhu is one of the most historically significant distilleries in Scotland, and the statue on its grounds tells the story better than any plaque could. Two golden figures stand side by side: Helen Cumming raising her famous red flag, and the Johnnie Walker Striding Man. Together they represent one of the great partnerships in whisky history. Helen Cumming founded Cardhu in 1824 alongside her husband John, making it one of the first distilleries in Scotland to be legally licensed by a woman. But Helen was the driving force. During the years of illicit distilling that preceded the Excise Act, she would raise a red flag on the hillside to warn neighbouring farmers when the excisemen were approaching - and then invite the officers inside for tea and refreshments while the evidence was quietly removed. That red flag became the symbol of Cardhu, and it stands proudly in the statue today. The connection to Johnnie Walker runs deep. In 1893, Helen's daughter-in-law Elizabeth Cumming sold Cardhu to John Walker and Sons, who used its malt as the backbone of the Johnnie Walker blend. The Walkers recognised what the Cummings had built, and Cardhu single malt remains a key component of Johnnie Walker Black Label to this day. The Striding Man - the iconic Johnnie Walker figure created in 1908 - strides forward in his top hat and tailcoat, a symbol of progress and ambition. Standing beside Helen Cumming on the Cardhu grounds, the two figures represent the spirit of Scottish whisky: resourceful, determined, and always moving forward. Cardhu's whisky is light, sweet, and approachable - honeyed fruit and vanilla with a gentle warmth. It is an excellent introduction to Speyside single malts and a distillery that rewards a visit for its history as much as its drams.
