Port Ellen Distillery

Port Ellen reopened on 19 March 2024 after more than four decades of silence, making the return of Islay's most celebrated ghost distillery one of the major modern stories in Scotch whisky. Established in 1825 and closed in 1983, the rebuilt Diageo distillery runs recreated Phoenix stills alongside smaller experimental stills, with its Ten Part Spirit Safe allowing the whisky makers to explore a wider range of spirit styles. New spirit is flowing again, while rare older Port Ellen releases remain sought after by collectors. Premium small-group experiences are available by advance reservation only and include distillery access, heritage and current-production storytelling, and guided tastings.
